Anxiety Disorders
There are many different forms of anxiety. Can you see you yourself with any of the following anxiety disorders? Many of these disorders will bring on anxiety attack symptoms.
Panic or anxiety attacks. Sudden and terrifying panic attacks come out of the blue making you feel as though you are having a heart attack. You feel dizzy, your fingers tingle, your heart is pounding, and you hyperventilate. The symptoms disappear as suddenly as the came leaving you feeling frightened, bewildered and humiliated. Panic Disorder (PD).
Chronic worrying. You worry about things like money, health, relationships and your job but find that this worry is constant and excessive. Your stomach churns and you feel like something bad is going to happen. Known as Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD).
Shyness. You become nervous after telling yourself that you are not as interesting as others, or that you will have nothing to say. This nervousness leads to such symptoms as a dry mouth, blushing, sweating and trembling. This is known as Social Anxiety Disorder.
Performance anxiety. Whenever you have to compete in some way, take a test, perform in front of others you freeze. Another form of Social Anxiety Disorder.
Public speaking anxiety. When you know that you have to speak in front of a group of people you tell yourself all the things that could go wrong and you freeze. You make yourself nervous because of your self talk. Your mouth goes dry, you tremble. Yet another form of Social Anxiety Disorder.
Acrophobia. You can’t leave home because you think something terrible is going to happen and there won’t be anyone to help you. Perhaps you see yourself having a panic attack. Open spaces terrify you. And you may fear crossing bridges, being in crowds, or using public transport.
Obsessions and compulsions. Obsessive thoughts enter your head that you just can’t shake from your mind and they make you fearful. You have a compulsion to perform superstitious rituals which appear to control your fear. Your fear may be of germs and this leads you to wash your hands all day. This is Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD).
Hypochondriac. Obsessive worries about your health, even though the doctor assures you that there is nothing wrong. You complain of aches and pains, dizziness or any other symptoms. The doctor’s assurance only relieves your anxiety for a few days.
Post-traumatic stress disorder. Memories or flashbacks of an horrific event haunts you even though they may have happened years ago. These events may have been abuse, rape, torture, motor vehicle accident, murder or armed combat.
Fears and phobias. Do you have an intense fear of spiders, heights, needles, flying, elevators, dogs or any number of other things. It could be a fear of being trapped in small spaces. These will bring on anxiety attack symptoms. This is Specific Phobia.
Some people have a tendency towards anxiety and worry and it is common for them to suffer from more than one type of anxiety symptom.
